2nd February

The top four courses of brickwork have been removed and the bricklayers are replacing them with new bricks and lime mortar so that the top is level.  This time a quicker setting version is being used.  The curb needs to go back in two or three weeks time which means the mortar has to be set by then.  At this time of year, with the cold weather, lime mortar will be slow to go off so they are using hydraulic additives to speed it up.

Some of the new bricks made ready...

Salvaged bricks can be reused...

This is where one of the legs was removed. Space is being left for the new 'legs' to be fitted into the tower. They'll be bricked in and bedded in mortar.
